Ruy Lopez (3...g6)

Opening moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6. Black plans to fianchetto the bishop on g7, but this slow setup lets White hit the centre quickly.

White answers with d4 and fast piece development, opening the position before Black finishes castling. This page follows the 1.e4 repertoire PGN and explains the 3...g6 lines in simple language.

Ruy Lopez with 3...g6 (from 1.e4 PGN)

Main idea: after 3...g6, play d4 and develop quickly. Black\'s kingside pawn moves take time, so White opens the centre to attack before Black is fully developed.
