Ruy Lopez (Steinitz Defense)

Opening moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 d6. Black plays an early ...d6, protecting the e5-pawn but allowing White to grab space.

White uses the move 4.d4 to push in the centre and put pressure on Black's position. This page follows the 1.e4 repertoire PGN and explains the Steinitz ideas in simple language.
